Start time of Draft

What time are we planning on starting the draft? Do we want to try and get some whiffle ball in before it starts, or would the wives find that too annoying?

And why hasn't Powell registered for this blog yet? Stupid Powell.

SJJL Draftboard

Take a look at this and let me know what you think. My VB coding is extremely limited, so modifying this too much isn't really an option. I'm working on trying to get it to play a sound when the timer goes off, but we'll see if I get that working or not. Basically it's set up so that all the keepers will be entered before hand and it automatically moves to next available draft selection when you make a pick. There's a list of all the current players (that were in the CBS system) and you just click on the box that has the list of players, begin to type the last name and when it jumps to who you want, or near the name that you want you can then use the arrow keys to scroll up or down, when your player is highlighted you click the "Make Draft Selection" button and it auto fills in the next available slot. And the timer is pretty self explanatory, start, stop, reset. For pick swaps the cells are highlighted yellow, with a comment on who gets the pick. Also, you must allow macros when you download this. I thought there was a way to upload files here on the blog, but it looks like you can't. So, I put it at 2Shared.com and the address is http://www.2shared.com/file/2897927/63603a05/SJJL2008DraftboardTEST2.html
Once you go there you'll see the file and a bunch of adds, scroll below the adds and click on Save to PC.

Presti

How badly do you wish the Mariners had a GM like Presti of the Sonics running them right now...

1) He got the Magic to do a sign-and-trade for Rashard last summer. That meant Rashard got more money, and the Sonics got a "trade exception", whatever that is. He gave up nothing that he wasn't already going to lose.

2) He used the trade exception to get Kurt Thomas and two first round picks (2008 and 2010) from Phoenix. He gave up nothing. Phoenix was over the salary cap, and didn't want Thomas, so it gave to (likely late) first round picks to save money.

3) He traded Thomas to San Antonio for a first round pick (2009) and two players. One he cut, the other will barely play.

4) He traded two players for three players, who he will pay less and whose money comes off the books earlier.

He is working the system, as opposed to making dumb, short-term moves. He will have a top five pick in the 2008 draft, which is stockpiled. He can trade a Collison/Ridnour/Swift, etc., plus their other first rounder from 2008 and their own pick from 2009, and likely get another early first round pick in the 2008 draft.

That would give them Durant, Green, and two top-10 guys from a stockpiled draft, along with three first round picks in the next two years. That is a ridiculous haul, and the exact things all fans of a team should be excited to see their GM doing.

Unless they are the Sonics, and they are owned by buffoons from another city ready to steal a team on the rise, and they are backed by an a-hole commissioner hellbent on moving a team to a much smaller market.

At least the Mariners aren't threatening moving, but their moves themselves are bad enough.

Swung on and belted!!...to shallow left.

It's nice to see that Niehaus is going to he Hall of Fame. As much as we like to rag on him for his miscalls (especially in the last several years) he really is a good broadcaster. I heard that Simms and his backwards leather beret is next...now there's a true legend.

bloggeringly annoying

i may be just used to posting on forums, where the most recent comment brings that post up to the top, but i looked all through the settings and i don't think that we can set the blog like that...and maybe i'm the only one that cares. but, it would be nice, in my opinion, if we didn't have to keep track of how many comments have been made on each post and then opening the post to see if you remembered right. anyhow, if it can be set to refresh as many forums do, i'd be in favor of it.

Who will be the most valuable fantasy baseball in 5 years?

I thought this was an interesting question as some of the past top performers are starting to be overtaken by younger players... I'm not ready to answer yet until I do some more analysis, but off the top of my head will guys like Ryan Braun or David Wright (who might already be at the top) take the throne away from Arod and Puljos? Not sure becasue AROD and Puljos are still fairly young, so in 5 years, they could still be at the peak of their game...

Thoughts?

pretty much sums it up...

SJJL's Most "Valuable" Players

As a follow-up to Craig's post below, I thought it would be interesting to see which players in our league are the biggest "values". I defined value as the difference between a player's current average draft position (ADP) and the equivalent draft position of the player's assigned round value for the upcoming draft (round value x 12).

Example : Magglio Ordonez has an ADP of 30. He'll cost Hanley an 8th round pick, which is the same as the 85th pick (assuming he's taken at the start of the round). So Ordonez has a positive "value" of 55.

Below are the 20 players who represent the biggest value. The top three are by far the top values, having ADPs in the top 50 and costing equivalent picks of 277. Powell may have been bad the past few years, but he's got 4 in the top 20 (including 3 in the top 10). Craig and Chris each have 3 in the top 20, and several others have 2.

Owners with no players on the list? That would be Jason and me. My biggest "value" is actually a player I'll probably not keep - Tim Hudson. That's not a good sign for the future, but at least last year (and this year, maybe) I'm in "win now" mode.

Top Rated duos in Shoeless Joe Jackson League

I did an analysis of each teams top two players. I didn't dive that deep into the numbers, though. I simply looked at the VORP numbers in the new Pecota projections. Because of this, I didn't necessarily look at the two players that a team would keep as their number 1 and number 2 players. Some of the players will be in the late rounds (Ryan Braun) some of the players might not even be kept (Chipper Jones). So take this analysis with a grain of salt, but I thought is was slighly interesting.

Some observations I had. I knew Tim had good players, but I didn't realize just how high his top players would rate. Also, I thought my team had two of the best players, but I was slightly surprised that they rated higher than Christian's top two (however, Christian would blow me away if you looked at the top 5 players from our teams). Hanley rates really high, but anyone with Puljos will. No surprise that Jason's top 2 are by far the worst. I would have thought Woodhouse would have faired better before doing this analysis.

There are also three groups here. Tim, Christian, Craig, Tracy and Hanley all project to over 100 points. The next group in the 80-100 range is Chris, Powell (who I'm surprised rated this high), Morten, Albaugh, and Woodhouse. Then in the 60-80 range we have Gintz and Jason (who rates just horrible).

Like I said though, these stats are not that important as not everyone will keep their top two players, and many of the players used for this would not be in the top 2 anyway. I will say, there looks like there will be 3-4 teams that will keep 0 or 1 players in their top 2.

Here is how things ranked out: (number is based on combined VORP of top two players)
Tim 129.9
Hanley 124.2
Tracy 109,7
Craig 107.9
Christian 106.1
Chris 95.8
Powell 91.5
Albaugh 86.7
Morten 84
Woodhouse 81.1
Gintz 79
Jason 61.4

So long Clemens, it was nice knowing you...

I was really hoping, as naive at it was, that there was a chance that Clemens was clean. I would have even settled for the excuse that everyone else is using "I tried it once, but was disgusted by it and didn't want to associate myself with steroids". Being a kid with no one to root for other than a crappy M's team 2500 miles to the south, I fell in love with Clemens. I had his posters, t-shirts, he and Sandberg were the guys I 'collected' in the baseball card world. I remember going to a card show with about $25 I had been saving up and blew it all Clemens, that's a decent chunk of change for a 10 year kid in the late 80's. As time went on I began to realize that he was a bit of an arrogant hothead, but still, he always had a special spot on my internal shelf of baseball memories. As I listen to the congressional hearings this morning I try not to jump to conclusions, but it is not looking good for Clemens. The fact that Pettitte swore that Clemens told him that he took HGH is pretty striking. I really don't see Clemens wriggling out of this one, but we'll see what else is said in the hearings. I suppose we can still asume his 20k night against the M's is legit.

Operation Blogdown

I was just informed that I'm going to have to compete for writing time on this blog. Well, I've only got one thing to say, they aren't paying me to sit. I'm not going to compete for a job. I don't write well in the Spring. If they want to let me write, fine. Otherwise, I'm going into operation blogdown mode.

SJJL Trophy

hey cecil....have you gotten the trophy engraved yet?

Shoeless Joe Jackson League Thoughts

With our current league becoming so sophisticated, we should document all our league rules and standards on this site. Maybe some other fantasy users will stumble upon how we do things and want to use our League Policies. Seems like we probably have one of the more complicated and interesting fantasy leagues around. Especially with our new keeper rules, and how our keepers affect the draft.

Also, who are the favorites in this years league? Seems like with the new system, there will be more parody in the league. However, my guess is Christian will be back up around the top again. Morten should be down based on how he mortaged the future to win last year. I think my team (which I have yet to determine a name for) has two of the best keepers out there, but I’m not sure how good my supporting keepers are. And I will have to draft way better than I did last year… Richie Sexson in the 5th round anyone?

It would be interesting to see a statistical analysis of the teams keepers before the draft, to see who has the best group of keepers. Then do another set of projections after the draft. This would show us who had the best drafts and who had the worst drafts.
Ok, that’s enough babling. I will bring something more to the table in my next post….

Welcome to Fantasy Geeks All Things Baseball Blog

This site is meant for baseball and fantasy baseball fans who want to get their opinion out about all things baseball… the main contributors of this site will be Seattle Mariners fans, however, they are also hardcore fantasy baseball experts, who have knowledge on how to run a good baseball team.

Anyone is welcome to post here, however, make sure you bring something to the table, or else you might find your post thrown to the scrap heap.

Lets have some fun this baseball season!
