SJJL Draftboard

Take a look at this and let me know what you think. My VB coding is extremely limited, so modifying this too much isn't really an option. I'm working on trying to get it to play a sound when the timer goes off, but we'll see if I get that working or not. Basically it's set up so that all the keepers will be entered before hand and it automatically moves to next available draft selection when you make a pick. There's a list of all the current players (that were in the CBS system) and you just click on the box that has the list of players, begin to type the last name and when it jumps to who you want, or near the name that you want you can then use the arrow keys to scroll up or down, when your player is highlighted you click the "Make Draft Selection" button and it auto fills in the next available slot. And the timer is pretty self explanatory, start, stop, reset. For pick swaps the cells are highlighted yellow, with a comment on who gets the pick. Also, you must allow macros when you download this. I thought there was a way to upload files here on the blog, but it looks like you can't. So, I put it at 2Shared.com and the address is http://www.2shared.com/file/2897927/63603a05/SJJL2008DraftboardTEST2.html
Once you go there you'll see the file and a bunch of adds, scroll below the adds and click on Save to PC.

I played with it a little, but I found it a little clunky. Mind you, even though I've done a lot in Excel, I have no ability to do anything remotely easier.

But, it is tricky enough that it may work better to simply do an Excel spreadsheet where we typed in the names, and put a separate clock out to the side to have a countdown...or Albaugh can be the one to enter all the picks.

I figured out how to make a sound clip play when the timer hits 0:00. So I'll make sure to include it on the final version for draft day. Now to find that perfect sound bite...

Ok, I'm not trying to get defensive with my sweet draft board...but what exactly is clunky? Here let me help you:

Click the list of names
type the last name
Make sure your guy is highlighted
Click Select botton
hit the clock reset button

I don't know, seems pretty clunky...for a CPA I suppose.

Maybe I didn't read the directions well enough. I tried to go to a box, and then type the name. Didn't work, cause I'm a nimrod and I should have been in the box above.

Also, if we put in the wrong player, is there a way to undo that? And where did you get that list of players. Is that everyone who has been in the majors or minors in the last 10 years. That list is HUGE!

Ok, I'm getting the player selection thing to work, but not the timer.
I agree that it isn't the smoothest, but it's still pretty cool.

The timer isn't working for me, but that might be because I have excel 97.

Is there a way we could all have the same file open?

The list of players is the entire list of players that is in on CBSSportsline, it seemed overly exhaustive, so it should cover everyone.

It works just like a normal excel spreadsheet, if you enter in the wrong guy, just click on the cell and hit delete.

I would assume that the clock bug is due to excel97.

I have no idea about all being on the same file at the same time. That would have to be through some sort of MS Office online collaboration thing or something. I think there is such a thing, but I've never used it.

The point of this, other than screwing around with VB, is that we will have a central spot that we can all look at to know who is next, who's been taken, and where the draft swaps are, and where the keepers are. As opposed to yelling at Hanley because it's been his pick for 5 min and he never knew it....or House being "that guy" again.

Andy, this is quite cool...

we would need to make sure someone was designated to update it though. Would this hinder someone's prep time?

I suppose once your ready to pick, you walk over to the designated laptop, and enter your pick... that might be the best way...

The other option is we have 4-5 people who take shifts.

Last year I was at the computer relaying all of the picks, and while I won't claim that was why I didn't win the league, I felt I had a very limited amount of prep time during the draft, and it was certainly less fun...

You know I liked Andy's cell phone idea? Does anyone have a cell phone with conference call or 3 way calling capability?

That way we wouldn't have to relay picks via the computer. They would simply hear who we picked.

I lean towards agreeing with Gintz, we should rotate the DBO (Draft Board Operator). Someone had discussed breaking the draft into 4ths or 5ths and having a 15 min break or so in between to get drinks and hotwings, that would be a great time to switch up the DBO. I actually made this for last years draft, and it worked fine, I was able to keep the board updated and not feel like it was hindering me in any way. My crappy draft in 07 was purely my own doing.

But, if it looks like the DBO is not able to handle keeping track of his draft and clicking the draft board, then I see no reason why we can't just walk up and make a pick on the laptop. I think that if we shout out our pick before the timer goes off and then walk up and make the selection there would be no penalty. Either way, I think it will work.

I think the main problem that we're going to have is keeping the East coasters (and anyone else who's absent) in the loop. I suggest using a cell phone for each Tracy and Mort and keep them on speaker. Or maybe someone has 3way calling that could work. I think we should shy away from IM and use a method that we can actually yell at Mort and let him know that the timers about to go off.

well, it looks like Capt. Feathersword and I are on the same page...as far as 3 way calling goes. Arrghh!

Is there anyone not in the league we could convince to waster his life running the board? Jones or Ryan Alexander maybe?
